Repairs and Adaptations

If you are a home owner (or rent your home but are obliged to carry out repairs) and you need advice and information about repairs or adaptations, a local Care & Repair or Staying Put agency may be able to help.

These services can give advice and assistance about finding the money to pay for work, finding a reliable builder and supervising the building work or give other practical help which may enable you to live independently in your own home for longer. Some also run 'odd job' or 'handyperson' services.

To find out if there is a Care & Repair or Staying Put agency in your area you can contact Foundations (tel 01457 891909, www.foundations.uk.com ) or the Elderly Accommodation Council www.housingcare.org/search/home-improvement-agency.aspx

If there is no such service in your area sometimes a local Age Concern may be able to help with odd jobs. Age Concern England can let you know if there is a local Age Concern. They also produce a range of Fact Sheets covering housing advice. Contact their Information line 0800 009966 or www.ageconcern.org.uk

The local council grants department may also give some advice and information about money to pay for repairs or hold a list of reputable builders - See our self help guide for more information.

If you need an adaptation to your home, the first people to contact are Social Services. Usually the Occupational Therapist will need to visit you at home to advise you about adaptations and also help with applying for a Disabled Facilities Grant.
